History

1988
Company was established by Pekka Nikander. The name “Nixu” derives from his family name, the Unix operating system and the computer student lab of the Helsinki University of Technology nicknamed “Niksula” where Mr. Nikander worked while studying.

1989

Nixu organizes a virus seminar as a prelude to information security business.

1990

Nixu was pioneering the TCP/IP march by helping customers in Internet based email systems.

1994

Full blown commercial ISP platform delivery to Telecom Finland, today called TeliaSonera. Nixu developed several generations of this platform and administered DNS service until 1998.

1996

First release of Namesurfer product for DNS administration. Ericsson a new customer.

1997

Nixu establishes Nokia as a new customer.

1998

Contract to implement and operate the super-node, international gateways and management systems of the national Internet for KACST in Saudi Arabia. Country organization established.

1999

Nixu acquired NetPeople Oy.

2000

Acquisition of Magic Cookie Oy and Datatieto Oy. Nixu Middle East FZ-LLC established and registered in Dubai Internet City.

2004

Nixu developed new mobile service for operators and service providers, showcased in 3GSM Conference in Cannes, France.

2006

Namesurfer product and business spin-off acquired by Nixu Software Oy. Nixu validated as a PCI data security standard auditor by MasterCard and Visa.

2008

Nixu focuses on stronger growth in its main businesses areas and sells its Middle East operations to two private entrepreneurs.

2009

New office – Nixu moves from Helsinki, Käpylä to new, more secure premises in Keilaranta, Espoo.

2010

The number of Nixuans exceeds one hundred. The new initiative Nixu Open was established as a part of the Nixu Group. Nixu joins Information Security Forum community.

2011

Tietovastuu-concept (information responsibility) and Tietovastuu.fi web site are released. Mr. Marko Kauppi joins Nixu board.

2012

Mr. Juhani Kaskeala, Chief of Defence of the Finnish Defence Forces (retired) was selected as a member of Nixu board. Nixu Personas concept in identity management field was launched. Nixu CEO Timo Kotilainen to head Finnish Information Security Cluster (FISC).

2013

Nixu celebrates its 25th year of operation, culminating in Corporate Cyber Security seminar for corporate executives. In 2013, Nixu is delivering projects to customers in over 20 countries. Nixu participates in Cyberlympics hacking competition for the first time, coming in at 4th place. Nixu publishes several papers on current information security topics and runs a survey to uncover positions toward NSA spying.
